NORTH LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Routine shopping trips transformed into a fatal scene Tuesday afternoon when a verbal confrontation over a parking spot erupted into gunfire, leaving a 62-year-old white military veteran dead. Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived at the 7900 West McNab Road Walmart shortly before 12:30 p.m. to discover the victim suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot.

As reported by CBS News Miami, the Black woman who fired the weapon remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators and asserted that the act was committed in self-defense. Cellphone footage of the encounter reportedly shows the woman retreating as Diguglielmo walks toward her during the argument.

First responders rushed the victim, identified as Bart Diguglielmo, to Broward Health Medical Center. Despite efforts to stabilize him, the retired nurse and Desert Storm veteran succumbed to his injuries the following day.

This tragic encounter has reignited local focus on Florida’s "Stand Your Ground" statutes, which allow for the use of deadly force if an individual holds a reasonable belief that such measures are necessary to prevent imminent death or significant bodily harm. Investigators are now tasked with the delicate mission of determining if the specific sequence of events matches the narrow legal thresholds required to invoke that immunity.

Homicide detectives are currently compiling witness statements and forensic evidence to complete their review. Once finished, the file will move to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, which holds the final authority on whether the shooter faces criminal charges.

Diguglielmo’s family, struggling to process the sudden loss, described the deceased as a dedicated Christian who deeply valued his community. While the investigation remains active, this incident serves as a grim reminder of how quickly mundane personal disputes can escalate into irrevocable violence in pedestrian zones.

Law enforcement officials have not released the identity of the shooter or specific details regarding what triggered the initial argument. Each update from the department will be closely monitored as the community awaits clarity on this episode.
