Florida Congressman Byron Donalds added fuel to growing Republican speculation after publicly suggesting Governor Ron DeSantis could serve as United States Attorney General if Donald Trump wins another term in the White House.
Speaking during an interview reported by Florida Politics, Donalds praised DeSantis’s legal background and executive experience while discussing possible cabinet choices tied to a future Trump administration. “I think Ron would do a phenomenal job,” Donalds said while describing DeSantis as someone capable of leading the Department of Justice.
DeSantis served in the United States House of Representatives before winning Florida’s governorship in 2018. Since taking office in 2019, he built a national conservative profile through clashes over immigration, education policy, public health restrictions, and federal authority.
Donalds argued DeSantis’s experience handling constitutional disputes and major state legal battles would translate naturally into the Attorney General role. Position carries major influence inside any administration because it oversees federal prosecutions, constitutional litigation, criminal investigations, and enforcement priorities across the Department of Justice.
DeSantis has not publicly responded to Donalds’s remarks, and no indication exists that Trump formally considered him for the position. Still, suggestion reignited conversations surrounding DeSantis’s political future following his unsuccessful 2024 presidential campaign.
Relationship between Trump and DeSantis shifted repeatedly during recent years as both men moved from political allies to presidential rivals before eventually reuniting ahead of the general election. DeSantis suspended his presidential campaign in January 2024 and later endorsed Trump.
Attorney General selections tied to a future Trump administration would likely face intense public scrutiny because Trump repeatedly criticized federal prosecutors, special counsels, and Justice Department leadership throughout recent legal battles and campaign appearances.
Donalds, who launched his campaign for Florida governor earlier this year, remained closely aligned with Trump across multiple election cycles. His comments also signaled continuing Republican efforts to position influential conservative figures for future national leadership roles.
Political strategists continue monitoring how prominent Republicans align themselves ahead of another presidential cycle, particularly as cabinet speculation increasingly becomes part of broader conversations surrounding party leadership and ideological direction.
For now, Donalds’s remarks remain political speculation rather than evidence of a pending appointment. Even so, mention of DeSantis for Attorney General placed one of the Republican Party’s most visible figures back at the center of national political conversation.
