Prime Minister Gaston Browne has secured one of the strongest mandates of his tenure after an early election delivered a decisive parliamentary majority for his ruling party.

Browne’s Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party won 15 of the country’s 17 seats, expanding its hold on power and securing a fourth consecutive term. According to the Associated Press, the result sharply reduced the opposition, leaving the United Progressive Party with a single seat while a Barbuda based party retained the only other opposition position.

Decision to call the vote nearly two years ahead of schedule reshaped the political calendar, allowing Browne to seek a renewed mandate at a moment defined by rising living costs and broader economic pressure.

Campaign messaging centered on continuity, with Browne pointing to tourism recovery and infrastructure expansion as evidence of progress. These issues dominated a campaign shaped by cost concerns and external economic uncertainty.

Opposition losses were severe. United Progressive Party leader Jamale Pringle retained his seat, while Trevor Walker of the Barbuda People’s Movement secured representation for Barbuda, leaving parliament with only two non government members.

Result marks a sharp reversal from the previous election, when the ruling party held a narrow majority. Gains in this cycle reflect both expanded support for the governing party and a weakened opposition structure following defections and internal division.

Browne’s political position has been reinforced by this outcome, giving his administration broader control over legislative priorities and reducing the likelihood of resistance within parliament.

Election followed a period of political movement that included party defections and shifting alliances, developments that reshaped the balance ahead of the vote. Those changes limited the opposition’s ability to mount a unified challenge across constituencies.

With a reinforced majority, Browne now faces expectations to translate electoral support into measurable gains, particularly in areas tied to cost of living, employment, and economic growth.

Government has emphasized the need to maintain stability while advancing development goals, positioning the result as a mandate to continue policies already underway rather than shift direction.

Scale of the victory places added focus on delivery, as voters who backed continuity now expect results that address economic pressure and sustain growth.

Early election strategy delivered a decisive outcome, converting a calculated political move into a mandate that reshapes the balance of power across Antigua and Barbuda.
