A violent domestic dispute in Suffolk County escalated into a life-altering attack when a woman used an explosive device against her boyfriend, leaving him with catastrophic injuries. The case has drawn attention not only for the severity of the act but also for the warning signs that preceded it.
According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, 35-year-old Keyonna Waddell was convicted following a jury trial for first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors said the March 22, 2024 incident involved Waddell throwing an explosive device into the victim’s bedroom while he was asleep, leading to devastating injuries.
Investigators determined that the attack followed an argument between the couple, after which both individuals initially left the residence. When the victim later returned home believing the situation had calmed, he went to sleep unaware of what would happen next.
Authorities say the victim was awakened by a hissing sound and saw what appeared to be an explosive device on the floor. As he attempted to remove it from the room, the device detonated in his hand, causing severe trauma that resulted in the loss of his hand and part of his arm.
Evidence presented during the trial also showed that Waddell had allegedly made prior threats involving explosives in the months leading up to the incident. Those threats, which were not taken seriously at the time, became a critical factor in establishing intent and premeditation during prosecution.
After the explosion, the victim managed to make it outside, where he was found by responding officers and transported to Nassau University Medical Center for emergency treatment. Authorities said Waddell fled the scene but was arrested the following day after an investigation.
The conviction carries significant legal consequences, as both charges are classified as violent felonies under New York law. Waddell now faces a potential sentence of up to 25 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for May 27, 2026.
Prosecutors emphasized that the case underscores how domestic conflicts can escalate into extreme violence when threats are ignored or dismissed. Officials continue to stress the importance of intervention and awareness in situations where warning signs of violence are present.
As the case moves toward sentencing, it stands as a stark example of the risks associated with domestic disputes involving escalating threats. The outcome is expected to reinforce the legal system’s stance on violent offenses involving explosive devices and the long-term impact such acts have on victims.
