Karmelo Anthony sat beneath a team tent during a Frisco ISD track meet when an exchange with Austin Metcalf turned deadly.

A teenage athlete told the jury he saw physical contact before the stabbing. His recollection placed Metcalf initiating contact shortly before the encounter turned violent.

Anthony, now 19, is accused of fatally stabbing Metcalf during the April 2025 meet in Frisco. Lawyers representing Anthony maintain he acted in self defense, while prosecutors contend the stabbing was murder, according to CBS News coverage of the trial.

Jurors heard that Anthony was seated with a backpack in his lap when Metcalf approached him. The teenager recalled Metcalf placing both hands on Anthony before a knife was pulled from the bag and driven into Metcalf's chest.

Repeated requests for Anthony to leave the tent became another point of disagreement. Prosecutors point to those interactions as evidence of intent, while the defense maintains fear drove Anthony's actions.

Physical evidence includes a folding knife recovered near the scene along with statements from students, coaches and emergency personnel. Their descriptions have helped piece together events surrounding the stabbing.

Rain moved across the athletic complex as students searched for cover beneath tents and equipment shelters. What began as a routine school competition eventually became the focus of a criminal trial followed far beyond Frisco.

Seats filled early as spectators gathered to listen. Many remained silent while witnesses described what they saw near the tent.

Metcalf's death sent shockwaves through two school communities. Friends, relatives and classmates have closely followed each stage of the trial while awaiting a verdict.

Harassment and threats directed at both families have added emotional strain. Online posts and public commentary have spread far beyond the track meet where the stabbing took place.

Attorneys continue presenting sharply different explanations as the panel weighs competing descriptions of the deadly encounter.
