AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — A young woman burst from a wooded area with handcuffs behind her back, sprinting across a rural highway as a Cadillac swerved from side to side behind her. A truck driver's dashboard camera captured the frightening chase moments before strangers stepped in and stopped what prosecutors say became a kidnapping.
Anthony Moore was driving his route Friday morning when the woman ran directly toward his truck. Video later showed her zigzagging across the pavement while a Cadillac followed close behind. Moore said the scene looked less like a traffic incident and more like someone running from immediate danger.
"Help me, help me. He's trying to kidnap me," the woman told Moore after reaching his truck. Another motorist stopped nearby, called 911, and helped remove the handcuffs while the suspect drove away.
Jonathan Willard, 39, was later identified as the man accused in the case. According to WRDW, prosecutors say he posed as a law enforcement officer, placed the woman in handcuffs, and forced her into his vehicle before she broke free. He now faces kidnapping and impersonation charges.
Graduation celebrations had just ended when she was walking between relatives' homes and encountered a man who claimed he was a police officer. Court records state her phone and personal belongings were taken before she was driven away. An opportunity appeared when the Cadillac stopped near a gated property and the driver stepped toward the trunk. She climbed forward and slipped through an open door.
Moore recalled that the danger did not end once she reached the roadway. He watched the Cadillac veer toward her repeatedly as she crossed traffic trying to stay out of its path. "She would run on one side of the road. He'd try to run her over. Then she'd run to the other side and he'd try to run her over there," Moore told reporters.
Video from the truck quickly became one of the strongest pieces of evidence because it preserved the panic visible in those moments. Physical items recovered near the location where she got away later became part of the prosecution. Moore said a deputy told him discoveries near a fence line strengthened the allegations against the suspect.
Detectives have not publicly identified additional women connected to the allegations, but they continue reviewing material tied to the arrest. That effort carries added weight because the accusations involve someone charged with using the appearance of police authority to gain control of a stranger.
Friday's encounter lasted only minutes. The images left behind tell a much longer story: a handcuffed graduate racing across a highway, a truck driver hitting the brakes, and a dashboard camera preserving moments that may have prevented a tragedy.
