Kendrick Perkins erupted near the end of his son’s AAU basketball game after tempers broke loose inside the Trae Young Family Athletic Center in Norman, Oklahoma. Video from the gym showed the former NBA center charging toward members connected to the opposing Swaveway Playaz bench before several men grabbed him near the sideline.
“I’m going to protect every single kid in my organization like they’re my own,” Perkins later wrote after the confrontation, reported by TMZ Sports. The former Celtics champion defended his reaction after footage from the gym moved rapidly across basketball pages.
Witnesses described the matchup between YPG Perkins and Swaveway Playaz as rough from the opening minutes. Frustration finally exploded after what people close to Perkins described as a non basketball play involving one of his athletes late in the game.
Players drifted away from the bench area once shouting echoed through the building. Parents rose from the stands while coaches pushed between both sides trying to stop the scene from getting worse.
Off duty Norman Police Department officers working security at the tournament stepped onto the court once yelling intensified. Police later confirmed no arrests were made and no criminal charges followed the confrontation.
Kennard McGuire, who represents Perkins, defended the former NBA player after clips from the scene began spreading widely. McGuire said emotions escalated because young athletes connected to Perkins’ program were involved.
Perkins built much of his NBA reputation through physical play and relentless intensity during a 14 year career. Time spent in Boston and Oklahoma City helped cement his image as one of the league’s toughest interior players.
Aggression remained visible near the scorer’s table during the closing moments of the matchup. Spectators backed away while voices carried across the packed gym.
Youth tournaments across the country have drawn growing attention after repeated confrontations involving coaches and parents near the court. Loud gyms and emotional crowds increasingly create scenes far removed from youth development.
He faced another AAU ejection in Las Vegas during 2023 after arguing with referees over one of his players being removed from competition. Video from that incident also spread heavily across basketball platforms.
No injuries connected to the confrontation were publicly reported as of Tuesday night. Tournament organizers have not publicly announced whether additional disciplinary action will follow after footage from the incident continued moving through basketball circles.
