Brandon Clarke’s sudden death at age 29 has left the NBA community searching for answers after authorities began investigating whether the Memphis Grizzlies forward died from a possible overdose inside a California home.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded Monday evening to a medical emergency call at a residence in the San Fernando Valley. Clarke was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released an official cause of death while the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner continues its investigation.
NBC Los Angeles reported investigators discovered drug paraphernalia inside the home and are examining the possibility of an overdose while awaiting final autopsy results.
News of Clarke’s death spread quickly Tuesday after Priority Sports confirmed the loss of the seven year NBA veteran. Memphis later released a statement mourning a player who spent his entire professional career with the organization after arriving during the 2019 NBA Draft.
Clarke became one of Memphis’ most respected role players during the franchise’s rise into playoff contention alongside Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. His athleticism, defensive energy, and relentless effort made him a fan favorite during some of the Grizzlies’ strongest recent seasons.
Before reaching the NBA, Clarke emerged as one of college basketball’s top forwards during his time at Gonzaga after transferring from San Jose State. His 2018 and 2019 season helped Gonzaga remain among the nation’s elite programs and pushed him into the first round of the NBA Draft.
Injuries disrupted much of his later career. Clarke suffered a torn Achilles in 2023 and later battled knee and calf injuries that limited him to only two appearances during the 2025 and 2026 season.
Last month, Clarke was arrested in Arkansas on charges tied to possession and trafficking of a controlled substance along with speeding and fleeing police allegations. No public resolution in that case had been announced before his death.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a statement Tuesday describing Clarke as a beloved teammate who played with passion and toughness throughout his career. Former teammates, coaches, and players across the league also shared tributes remembering Clarke for his kindness and energy away from basketball.
For many basketball fans in Memphis, Clarke represented more than production on the court. His hustle and connection with teammates helped define one of the franchise’s most promising eras before injuries and personal struggles interrupted the path many believed he was still climbing.

Wow, this is sad. He was so young. I wish the media wouldn’t have alluded to him having an overdose until after the autopsy. I hate how they love to besmirch celebrities name for the sake of a story.
