Joel Embiid helped deliver one of Philadelphia’s biggest playoff victories in decades before another postseason loss shifted attention back toward criticism surrounding his career.

Sixers fans celebrated after Philadelphia erased a 3 to 1 deficit against Boston and closed the series with a Game 7 win at TD Garden. Victory marked the franchise’s first playoff series win over the Celtics since 1982 and only the second Game 7 road victory in team history.

According to ESPN, Embiid scored 24 points during Philadelphia’s elimination loss to the New York Knicks after the Sixers were swept out of the next round. Defeat restarted debate surrounding Embiid’s postseason record and whether the former MVP can lead Philadelphia through multiple playoff rounds.

Embiid spent much of the season managing injuries while carrying championship expectations tied to the franchise. Return against Boston changed the series and helped steady Philadelphia after the Sixers appeared close to elimination earlier in the playoffs.

Boston coach Joe Mazzulla previously credited Embiid’s return from injury as a major reason Philadelphia survived the Celtics series. Presence of the 7 foot center changed matchups on both ends of the floor and restored confidence inside the roster.

Momentum from that breakthrough disappeared against New York. Knicks controlled pace throughout the series and forced Philadelphia into difficult late game possessions while Embiid battled exhaustion from another demanding postseason.

Criticism surrounding Embiid remained intense because his regular season production consistently placed him among basketball’s elite players. Size, footwork, scoring touch, and defensive presence made him one of the league’s toughest matchups when healthy.

Postseason results continue shaping much of the conversation surrounding his legacy. Conference finals still remain absent from Embiid’s résumé despite MVP honors, scoring titles, and multiple All NBA selections.

Philadelphia fans remain divided over responsibility after another disappointing finish. Some supporters point toward injuries, roster instability, coaching changes, and flawed roster construction around Embiid. Critics argue franchise stars eventually break through repeated playoff disappointments regardless of circumstances.

Philadelphia enters another offseason facing questions about roster direction and championship hopes in the Eastern Conference. Embiid has not publicly suggested frustration with the organization despite pressure following another early playoff exit.

For many fans, Embiid’s performances against Boston still represented some of the best playoff basketball of his career. Another collapse against New York reopened the question that has followed Philadelphia for years: whether dominant stretches from Joel Embiid will ever turn into a championship run.
