Cherrie Moore was asking officers to call her father and help her get mental health assistance when a confrontation in Shelby, North Carolina, took a turn that would eventually cost an officer his job and bring criminal charges.
Karson Hyder, 22, surrendered June 1 after the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation charged the former Shelby police officer with assault inflicting serious injury. The charge stems from a May 29 encounter that quickly spread far beyond Cleveland County.
Investigators allege Moore, 34, suffered injuries that included a possible broken nose and a busted lip, reported by People. The criminal case against Hyder centers on what investigators say happened during those chaotic moments.
A homeowner's doorbell recording captured part of the encounter. The images appear to show Moore on the ground while Hyder strikes her repeatedly as another officer steps in and tells him to stop.
What led to the physical confrontation remains unclear. The recording begins after officers had already engaged with Moore, leaving state agents to reconstruct the earlier moments through witness accounts, officer statements and additional evidence.
Hyder's employment with the Shelby Police Department ended shortly after the incident drew statewide attention. Department leaders first placed him on suspension before ultimately terminating him as investigators continued reviewing what happened during the encounter.
Outside police headquarters, demonstrators gathered carrying signs and demanding answers. What started on a residential front lawn soon became a statewide story as recordings spread online and drew attention from activists, elected leaders and residents seeking a clearer explanation of what occurred.
Court records show Hyder was released after posting a $10,000 secured bond. It remains unclear whether he has retained an attorney.
Moore's legal situation shifted as prosecutors reviewed the case. Two of the three charges originally filed against her were dropped. A breaking and entering charge remains active, while allegations of resisting arrest and assault on a public officer were dismissed.
Questions that could not be answered by the recording alone are likely to become central once the case reaches court. Witness accounts, officer statements and physical evidence will be examined alongside the images that circulated online, as attorneys attempt to establish what happened before the confrontation moved into view of the homeowner's camera.
