Marlon Jackson Is Bringing Joe Jackson's Story to BLK Prime in New Docuseries

Joe Jackson's story will be told from his family's perspective in a new eight-episode documentary series that Marlon Jackson is developing with BLK Prime. Titled The Manager, The Mythology, The Legend, the project will feature Marlon as narrator while exploring the man many credit with building one of popular music's most successful recording dynasties.

Marlon said the series is intended to present a fuller portrait of Joe Jackson, whose demanding management style helped turn the Jackson 5 into international stars while also drawing decades of criticism over his strict parenting. Speaking to Page Six, Marlon said viewers will see both the triumphs and struggles that shaped his father's life rather than a one-dimensional portrayal.

According to Marlon, the documentary will explore Joe Jackson's early years, personal struggles, ambition and influence on the careers of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson and their siblings. Producers say the series will revisit the group's rise from Gary, Indiana, to worldwide fame while examining the vision that helped build the Jackson empire.

Janet Jackson has publicly defended parts of her father's legacy while also acknowledging the hardships of growing up under his leadership. After Joe Jackson's death in 2018, she praised his determination to lift the family out of poverty, but later recalled that saying no to him was difficult because he controlled many decisions involving her music.

News of the project follows renewed interest after the commercial success of the Michael biopic. While some of Joe Jackson's children have praised his determination to lift them out of poverty and guide their lives, others have publicly discussed the emotional and physical discipline they experienced growing up.

BLK Prime has not announced a premiere date for the series. The company says additional information about pre-production and casting will be released in the coming months as work continues on the documentary.
