Morgan State University closed out a landmark academic year after awarding more degrees than at any point in its 158 year history. Administrators say the milestone reflects years of higher enrollment, broader course offerings, and sustained efforts to keep more undergraduates and doctoral candidates on track through completion.
Crowds filled university venues in Baltimore this spring as nearly 1,900 graduates crossed commencement stages in front of families, faculty members, and alumni. Degree totals at Morgan have nearly doubled since 2010, signaling a major shift at one of the nation’s largest historically Black universities.
Morgan State awarded 1,876 degrees during the 2025 to 2026 academic year, according to the university. That total included 1,335 bachelor’s degrees, 426 master’s degrees, and 115 doctorates. In 2010, the school graduated 946 people, less than half of this year’s figure.
Enrollment gains during the past five years have transformed the scale and visibility of the university in Baltimore. New doctoral pathways, laboratory opportunities, and specialized programs have pushed the institution beyond its traditional regional footprint.
Campus leadership has invested heavily in doctoral study tied to engineering, transportation, artificial intelligence, public health, and urban policy. Those fields now sit at the center of efforts to elevate Morgan’s standing among major public institutions.
Retention work has also played a major role in the increase. Officials credit advising initiatives, engagement programs, and expanded academic resources with helping more people finish degree programs.
Historically Black colleges and universities drew renewed national attention after 2020 as public interest and corporate funding increased throughout higher education. Morgan’s rise has stood apart because of its expanding doctoral profile and widening national reach.
State leaders and business groups increasingly point to Morgan as an economic driver connected to workforce preparation and innovation in Maryland. Rising degree totals are expected to reinforce the school’s position as officials pursue additional funding, construction projects, and national partnerships.
Enrollment increases have also placed heavier demands on university operations. Classroom space, housing availability, staffing, transportation, and long term planning needs have intensified alongside the institution’s growing profile.
Commencement celebrations this spring carried a sense of achievement alongside growing expectations surrounding Morgan’s next phase. School leaders now face mounting pressure to sustain that momentum without overextending systems supporting thousands of people entering the university each year.
