Mother Khadijah Farrakhan, the longtime wife of Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan, has died at 90, closing a 72-year marriage that placed her beside one of the most influential religious figures in modern Black America. Her passing was announced Saturday in an official statement from the Nation of Islam, which said she had "returned to Allah."
Because their marriage began in 1953, Mother Khadijah stood beside Minister Farrakhan through defining chapters in the Nation of Islam's modern history. Together they raised nine children during a 72-year marriage that became one of the organization's longest-lasting unions.
Profound gratitude shaped the organization's announcement. Reported by the Nation of Islam, the statement remembered her as a loving wife, mother and faithful follower of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad while asking for prayers and comfort for the Farrakhan family during a period of mourning. Funeral arrangements had not been announced, although Janazah service information will be shared when available.
Needless to say, her influence extended well beyond ceremonial appearances. While Minister Farrakhan became the public face of the movement, Mother Khadijah quietly helped sustain family life, remained a steady presence throughout her husband's stewardship of the Nation of Islam, and earned respect as the organization's First Lady.
Significant public appearances introduced many people to Mother Khadijah beyond her role within the organization. She appeared during Saviours' Day in Chicago in 2000 and spoke during the 1997 Million Woman March in Philadelphia, encouraging stronger families while emphasizing the importance of women within the Black community.
Tough family losses also marked the Farrakhans' later years, including the deaths of sons Louis Farrakhan Jr. in 2018 and Joshua Farrakhan in 2023. Even through those hardships, Mother Khadijah remained closely identified with the Nation of Islam, leaving behind a legacy rooted in faith, family, service and steadfast devotion that will endure through the lives she influenced.
Prayers continued arriving from admirers after the announcement as the Nation of Islam thanked Allah for what it called her precious life. No cause of death has been publicly disclosed, yet the organization's message made clear that Mother Khadijah's contributions reached far beyond public appearances and will remain woven into the movement she helped support throughout her husband's stewardship.
