Valentina Orellana Peralta’s family lost its wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles after jurors concluded that an LAPD officer acted lawfully during the shooting that killed the 14 year old inside a North Hollywood Burlington store.

Verdict reached May 7 after nearly three weeks of testimony in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to NBC Los Angeles. Jurors voted 9 to 3 in favor of the city and LAPD Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr., rejecting claims seeking up to $100,000,000 in damages tied to the teenager’s death.

Orellana Peralta was killed in December 2021 while shopping with her mother during a police response involving a suspect accused of assaulting customers inside the store. Family members said the teenager was hiding inside a dressing room when a bullet fired by Jones pierced a wall and struck her.

Jones fired at the suspect during a confrontation as officers attempted to stop what authorities described as a violent threat inside the Burlington location. Bullet intended for the suspect instead traveled through the dressing room wall where Orellana Peralta was taking cover with her mother.

Lawsuit filed by the family in 2022 argued that Los Angeles and Jones acted recklessly and failed to protect innocent shoppers during the encounter. Attorneys representing the city argued that Jones faced a rapidly unfolding emergency and acted within department policy while confronting a dangerous suspect.

Jurors sided with the defense, concluding that Jones’ use of force was justified despite the fatal outcome. Decision removes potential financial liability from both the city and the officer in one of Los Angeles’ most watched police shooting cases in recent years.

Death of Orellana Peralta drew national attention because of her age and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Surveillance footage and body camera video released after the incident intensified scrutiny surrounding police tactics inside crowded public spaces.

Case also renewed arguments surrounding police use of force during fast moving confrontations where officers make split second decisions inside heavily populated environments. Civil rights advocates and police supporters sharply disagreed over whether the shooting reflected tactical failure or an unavoidable tragedy during a violent emergency.

Neither Los Angeles city officials nor the LAPD immediately released public statements following the verdict. Attorneys representing the family also had not publicly indicated whether they planned to appeal the decision.

For Orellana Peralta’s relatives, verdict closed another painful chapter tied to a shooting that turned a holiday shopping trip into one of Los Angeles’ most devastating police tragedies in recent memory.
