Spring commencement at Morris Brown once arrived with questions about whether classes would continue another semester. This weekend, 93 seniors are preparing to receive degrees while the Atlanta institution holds accreditation approval through 2031, one of the clearest signs yet that its long decline may finally be slowing.
Graduates will receive diplomas May 16 at Saint Philip AME Church on Candler Road, according to Fox 5 Atlanta, completing studies in Business, Psychology, Music, Hospitality Management, General Studies, Organizational Management and Leadership, and Global Management and Applied Leadership.
For much of the past two decades, Morris Brown became associated less with academics and more with shrinking attendance, disappearing faculty positions, and mounting money problems. Loss of accreditation pushed the institution outside traditional higher education systems and left many alumni questioning whether it could survive.
Conditions began shifting in 2022 when accreditation returned after years in limbo that reshaped daily life across the grounds. Extension of that approval through 2031 now gives administrators room to recruit faculty members, attract applicants, improve fundraising, and steady operations.
Former Atlanta Falcons star Warrick Dunn will deliver the keynote address during commencement exercises. Dunn, now a limited partner owner within the Falcons organization, is also expected to receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree recognizing decades of philanthropy and civic work.
President Dr. Kevin James spent recent semesters trying to change public perception surrounding Morris Brown. Administrators concentrated heavily on restoring trust while persuading former students, applicants, and longtime advocates that the institution could still secure a future.
Church congregations, private contributors, graduates, and neighborhood supporters helped keep classrooms open during periods when money shortages appeared overwhelming. Alumni networks continued organizing public campaigns and donation drives even after accreditation loss weakened outside confidence.
Saturday’s event carries emotional significance extending beyond another graduating class. Families who watched Morris Brown endure repeated setbacks are preparing to witness one of the most encouraging moments the institution has experienced in modern times.
Smaller colleges nationwide continue struggling with declining attendance and rising expenses, particularly historically Black institutions facing intense financial pressure. Morris Brown enters commencement weekend with renewed energy, but preserving that progress could become far more difficult once celebration gives way to reality again.
