Justice Clarence Thomas entered another chapter of Supreme Court history Thursday after becoming the second longest serving justice ever to sit on the nation’s highest court, extending a tenure that has influenced American law for more than three decades.

Thomas joined the Supreme Court on October 23, 1991, after President George H.W. Bush nominated him to replace retiring Justice Thurgood Marshall. His years on the bench now surpass those of Justice Stephen Johnson Field, who served from 1863 through 1897. Only Justice William O. Douglas served longer.

Conservative legal circles have long viewed Thomas as one of the most influential voices shaping the court’s modern direction. His opinions helped drive major rulings involving gun rights, affirmative action, religious liberty, federal authority, and campaign finance while advancing constitutional arguments rooted in originalism and textualism.

According to SCOTUSblog, Thomas reached the milestone after more than 12,000 days on the Supreme Court, placing him behind only Douglas in total years served. Longevity alone made him one of the most consequential judicial figures of the modern era, particularly as the court shifted further right during recent administrations.

Thomas joined the majority in District of Columbia v. Heller in 2008, which affirmed an individual right to possess firearms under the Second Amendment. He also sided with the majority in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission in 2010, a ruling that reshaped campaign finance law by allowing unlimited independent political spending from corporations and unions.

Confirmation hearings in 1991 remain among the most contentious in modern Supreme Court history. Anita Hill accused Thomas of sexual harassment during nationally televised proceedings that divided the country and reshaped public conversations surrounding workplace misconduct and Senate confirmation battles. Thomas denied the allegations before securing confirmation through a narrow Senate vote.

Influence inside conservative jurisprudence expanded further after appointments made during President Donald Trump’s administration solidified a durable conservative majority on the court. Legal analysts increasingly point to Thomas as a foundational figure behind many constitutional arguments now shaping Supreme Court decisions.

Unlike some justices known for incremental opinions, Thomas often writes separately to advance broader constitutional theories and historical interpretations. Arguments once viewed as outside mainstream legal thinking gradually gained influence as conservative legal philosophy moved closer toward his long held views.

At 76 years old, Thomas remains one of the court’s most powerful and closely watched figures as disputes involving immigration, presidential authority, voting rights, and federal regulation continue reaching the bench. His judicial approach continues shaping debates extending far beyond the courtroom.

Supporters praise Thomas for constitutional consistency and independence from political pressure. Critics argue his tenure accelerated a dramatic rightward shift inside the Supreme Court. Few dispute his lasting influence. After more than 33 years on the bench, Clarence Thomas remains one of the defining legal figures of his generation.
