Drake Maye moved quickly to defend Patriots coach Mike Vrabel on Wednesday after renewed attention surrounding a reported 2021 boat outing involving former NFL reporter Dianna Russini spread across football media and social platforms.
Speaking after a public appearance, New England’s young quarterback praised Vrabel’s character and dismissed the possibility that outside conversation surrounding the report would create problems inside the Patriots locker room ahead of the upcoming season.
TMZ Sports reported Tuesday that Vrabel and Russini rented a private boat in Putnam County, Tennessee, during June 2021 while both were married to other people. Report stated Russini was roughly seven months pregnant at the time and later gave birth to her son, Michael Andrew, about two months after the outing.
“I know he’s got the right mindset, and I know he’s a great human being,” Maye told reporters. “I love playing for him.”
Vrabel and Russini had not publicly addressed details surrounding the report as of Wednesday evening. Russini previously worked at ESPN before later joining The Athletic prior to departing earlier this year.
Attention surrounding the story intensified online after details connected to the reported outing resurfaced during a slower stretch of the NFL calendar when off field stories often receive amplified attention. Much of the reaction centered on the personal circumstances surrounding both individuals during the reported trip.
Maye’s remarks marked one of the first public comments from a Patriots player tied directly to the situation. Quarterback repeatedly emphasized trust in Vrabel while signaling confidence that team preparation would remain focused on football activities rather than outside speculation.
Vrabel arrived in New England earlier this year carrying a reputation as one of the league’s most respected coaches following his tenure with the Tennessee Titans. Patriots leadership viewed him as a stabilizing figure for a franchise attempting to regain consistency after several difficult seasons following Bill Belichick’s departure.
Maye continues entering a larger leadership role inside the organization despite still being early in his NFL career. Former North Carolina quarterback is expected to become one of the franchise’s central figures as New England rebuilds around younger talent.
Public attention involving coaches, athletes, and media personalities often accelerates once private details become part of broader sports coverage online. Stories disconnected from on field performance can quickly dominate headlines, particularly during offseason months when league activity slows and social media speculation expands.
Neither the NFL nor the Patriots organization indicated any disciplinary issue connected to the report. No allegation of criminal conduct has emerged involving either Vrabel or Russini.
For now, New England players appear focused on offseason preparation while outside attention surrounding the report continues circulating online. Maye’s decision to publicly support Vrabel suggested at least one important voice inside the locker room has no interest in letting the situation fracture team focus before training camp begins.
