BUNIA, Congo — Smoke drifted above Mongbwalu after residents stormed an Ebola clinic in eastern Congo and ignited part of the compound, sending suspected carriers running into nearby districts during a dangerous surge of infections.

Nurses scrambled through darkness as chaos consumed the grounds overnight. Eighteen people believed to be carrying the virus disappeared after the assault and still had not been found by crews searching nearby territory.

Charred canvas, abandoned protective suits, and overturned supplies covered sections of the compound by sunrise. Nearby families already worn down by militia violence, hunger, and disease watched another emergency spiral through the province.

Dr. Richard Lokudi, director of Mongbwalu hospital, said terrified patients escaped after residents forced their way into the facility, according to the Associated Press. The clinic operated through Doctors Without Borders near the center of the crisis unfolding inside Ituri.

“People escaped into the community,” Lokudi said while describing the confusion that erupted after the crowd entered the compound.

No fatalities or major injuries were immediately reported, but the assault carved another setback into efforts aimed at slowing transmission across eastern Congo. Search crews stretched operations through isolated roads and crowded settlements while nurses raced to identify possible contact chains before additional illnesses surfaced.

Mongbwalu sits inside a volatile mining corridor where armed factions, displacement, and public suspicion have repeatedly disrupted disease response operations. Ambulances often travel beneath armed escort while burial teams enter neighborhoods wearing gear many residents associate with death rather than survival.

Distrust toward Ebola clinics has resurfaced repeatedly during earlier medical emergencies across the region. Rumors accusing foreign aid workers of spreading illness or profiting from suffering have circulated for years, leaving medical compounds exposed whenever distrust overwhelms cooperation.

Doctors Without Borders has previously warned that assaults against clinics and aid personnel could shatter efforts aimed at slowing transmission during active emergencies. Staff members entering infected zones already confront biological danger before facing crowds accusing them of bringing sickness into isolated communities.

Anxiety deepened after relatives learned suspected carriers had disappeared following the blaze. Nurses moved door to door through nearby districts searching for signs of fever, exposure, or unexplained illness tied to those who escaped.

Residents gathered outside scorched sections of the compound hours after smoke ripped through the site while security patrols crossed nearby roads. Eastern Congo now faces another collision between collapsing public trust and a virus capable of outrunning crews struggling to regain control.

This is a case of “people are dumb AF” because why would you run up in a facility where people have dangerous diseases and set it on fire? This almost seems as if it was done on purpose, initiated by outside forces, but still… the residents of this area sealed their of fate . Smmfh!
