Ronnie Lewis, a Black man, was sitting inside his own vehicle when Vallejo police officers moved in and took him into custody on felony carjacking charges. A lawsuit alleges officers overlooked major differences between Lewis and the description provided by the victim.
Lewis was wearing light colored clothing when officers Rosendo Mesa and Jeremy Callinan detained him near a recovered stolen vehicle. The person sought in the carjacking had been described as wearing all black, as reported by The Root.
Trouble for the identification effort surfaced once police brought the victim to the scene. Court documents state the victim could not identify Lewis and told officers the culprit wore a face covering during the crime.
Even with that information, Lewis was booked on felony charges. Attorneys representing him argue there was no reliable evidence placing him behind the wheel during the carjacking.
Candace Evans, Lewis's fiancée, was also detained while sitting in the passenger seat. No woman had been mentioned by the victim when describing the incident, according to allegations outlined in the complaint.
Lawyers for Lewis and Evans contend both were taken into custody despite facts pointing elsewhere. Their complaint argues officers moved ahead while key details failed to match either occupant of the vehicle.
Among the differences cited are clothing, the victim's inability to make an identification and the absence of any report involving a female participant. Those details now form the foundation of the civil action filed against the officers.
Additional court records referenced in the complaint describe Lewis as cooperative during the encounter. Attorneys argue his behavior offered no indication that he had participated in the violent crime at the center of the case.
Vallejo police have not publicly addressed the allegations contained in the lawsuit. Court proceedings will determine whether the officers had adequate grounds for their actions and whether Lewis and Evans' constitutional rights were violated.
Beyond the claims made by the couple, the dispute shines a light on how quickly mistaken identifications can escalate into life changing encounters. The lawsuit seeks damages while challenging the decisions that led to both detentions.
