WASHINGTON - Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has died at the age of 71 following a brief and sudden illness. His office confirmed the passing on Sunday, July 12, 2026.
Emergency responders were dispatched to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence on Saturday evening following a report of cardiac arrest. He was subsequently transported to George Washington University Hospital, where he later passed away.
Graham had recently returned from a diplomatic mission to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday. During that trip, he discussed potential new sanctions against Russia with other senators.
Throughout his career, Graham faced scrutiny for his public remarks regarding race and systemic issues. During a 2020 televised campaign event, he explicitly denied the existence of systemic racism in policing and dismissed claims that South Carolina was a racist state.
During that same event, he insisted that African Americans and immigrants could "go anywhere" in South Carolina as long as they were conservative. He further argued that his political rival, Jaime Harrison, would lose the election because of his Democratic party affiliation rather than his race.
In 2022, while supporting Herschel Walker’s Senate candidacy, Graham defended the Republican party against allegations of racism. He told Sean Hannity that nominating an African American candidate "destroys the whole narrative" of the left and questioned if Republicans were tired of being called racist.
President Donald Trump paid tribute to Graham on Truth Social, describing him as a "true American Patriot" and a close friend. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also issued a statement expressing his grief over the loss of a dear friend and ally.
Having served in the Senate since 2003, Graham was a prominent figure in Republican politics known for his hawkish foreign policy stances. He was actively running for re-election to a fifth term in the Senate at the time of his death.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has the authority to appoint a successor to fill the remainder of Graham's term. Funeral arrangements and details regarding the transition will be announced at a later time.
