Southern University has secured a national esports title, becoming the first historically Black college or university to win at the Division II level in collegiate competition.

As reported by the Eastern College Athletic Conference, the championship came in EA Sports College Football competition, where Southern defeated Bellarmine University in a best of five series. The deciding game ended 38 to 29, sealing a 3 to 2 series victory.

The result places Southern within a collegiate esports field that has expanded across campuses in recent years. Programs now operate with structured teams, coaching, and training environments that mirror traditional athletics.

Southern’s program has developed through steady institutional support and student participation, creating a system that blends competition with academic pathways. Students involved in esports often connect their experience to fields such as computer science, digital media, and data analysis.

Representation within esports has not matched its growth. Larger institutions have typically led the space, supported by funding and established infrastructure. Southern’s title reflects a model built through targeted investment and program development.

The championship also reflects the role of individual performance within team systems. Coby Robinson, a sophomore computer science major, delivered the deciding performance in the final game, closing the series after a back and forth contest.

Momentum around esports within historically Black colleges and universities has increased as more campuses explore programs that combine gaming with education. Southern’s result provides a benchmark for what sustained development can produce at the national level.

The impact extends beyond a single title. Increased visibility can influence recruitment, funding, and expansion of similar programs across other institutions seeking to enter the field.

Southern University’s win marks a change in who competes for national titles. It places HBCU programs within reach of future championships and signals that outcomes in collegiate esports are no longer limited to traditional power schools.
