BuzzFeed is changing hands at a valuation far below the numbers that once made the company one of digital media’s biggest success stories.
Byron Allen has agreed to acquire a controlling 52% stake through a $120,000,000 deal that places the media executive in charge. Jonah Peretti, who founded BuzzFeed in 2006, will remain involved while moving into a leadership position focused on artificial intelligence initiatives.
Allen’s takeover follows years of layoffs, restructuring, and declining advertising revenue across digital publishing. The company became one of the internet’s most influential media brands during the early 2010s after building massive traffic through viral lists, quizzes, entertainment coverage, and social media distribution.
Under terms disclosed by the company, Allen Family Digital will purchase 40,000,000 shares at $3 per share, according to BuzzFeed. Allen will pay $20,000,000 upfront while the remaining $100,000,000 will be structured as a promissory note due five years after the deal closes in May.
Financial struggles deepened as audiences shifted toward TikTok, YouTube, podcasts, Instagram, and creator driven platforms. BuzzFeed News shut down in 2023 after years spent investing in its journalism division.
At its peak, the company attracted interest from major entertainment businesses looking to capture younger online audiences. Reports from 2014 indicated Disney explored acquiring BuzzFeed for roughly $650,000,000, a figure that sharply contrasts with its current valuation.
Allen enters the deal after decades spent expanding Allen Media Group through television, cable, and weather related acquisitions. His company owns The Weather Channel along with local television stations and entertainment networks across the United States.
Peretti has increasingly focused on artificial intelligence and digital product development in recent years. The company previously experimented with AI driven quizzes, recommendation systems, and automated content tools while searching for new revenue opportunities.
BuzzFeed’s sale reflects how dramatically the digital publishing business has changed since the company helped define the viral media era more than a decade ago.
For many longtime media observers, the deal feels less like a growth story and more like the end of the internet publishing boom that once made BuzzFeed one of the industry’s most talked about companies.

Good for Allen. He is a great businessman but a HORRIBLE political operative !
Good on Byron for constantly adding to his media portfolio! I hope he does something worthy with it, but this is a risky investment and I wonder if it’ll be lucrative. BuzzFeed has lost a lot of Buzz over the years so he’ll need to get creative to revive it and move it forward with all the other sites taking over the media space.
