Oklahoma City spent most of Monday night roaring toward another playoff escape before Victor Wembanyama silenced the building with one shot, one dunk, and one exhausting reminder that the Western Conference no longer belongs comfortably to the defending champions.
San Antonio walked out of Paycom Center with a 122 to 115 double overtime victory in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, ripping away home court advantage after emotional swings and bruising possessions. Wembanyama finished with 41 points and 24 rebounds in one of the strongest performances of his young career.
Victor Wembanyama became the youngest player in NBA history to record a 40 point and 20 rebound postseason game, according to ESPN after the 21 year old also delivered defining plays late in extra time to shove the Spurs across the finish line.
Every quarter dragged the night deeper into exhaustion.
Oklahoma City repeatedly looked ready to seize momentum behind Shai Gilgeous Alexander, who accepted the league’s MVP trophy earlier in the evening before crashing into one of the roughest shooting nights of his postseason run. Gilgeous Alexander finished 7 for 23 from the floor while defenders crowded driving lanes and collapsed bodies toward the paint.
Alex Caruso kept the home crowd breathing.
A playoff career high 31 points poured out of the veteran guard while he dove across loose balls, intercepted passing lanes, and drilled momentum shifting threes that repeatedly rescued the top seed from disaster. Each basket detonated the arena again before another Spurs answer quieted it moments later.
Wembanyama eventually cracked the tension open.
Late in the first overtime, the 7 foot 4 star buried a deep three over extended coverage before hammering home an and one dunk that shoved his team back in front. Oklahoma City survived the first extra session but looked drained once the second overtime period opened.
Bodies slowed. Rotations slipped. Possessions turned ragged.
Gregg Popovich’s group attacked immediately.
Dylan Harper carved through the defense for key baskets while the Spurs tightened around Gilgeous Alexander and Jalen Williams. Harper finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals, and six assists after De’Aaron Fox missed the opener with an ankle injury.
For long stretches, the game carried the hostility and emotional weight of June basketball rather than a conference finals opener played in mid May. Timeouts arrived with players bent over at the waist while trainers rushed across the hardwood.
Game 1 also delivered a warning to the rest of the league.
San Antonio no longer resembles a rebuilding curiosity orbiting around Wembanyama’s future potential. Their roster now carries the size, shot creation, defensive length, and composure needed to drag experienced contenders into exhausting territory.
Oklahoma City still holds enough talent to reset the series quickly. Yet the emotional damage from Monday night lingered long after the final buzzer. The Thunder protected home court throughout the playoffs until San Antonio arrived and stretched one game into something far heavier than an early series loss.
