Texas conservatives aligned with Donald Trump stormed through another night of runoff voting, tightening the former president’s hold over some of the state’s most closely watched congressional races.
Several victors entered the contests without prior elected experience. Their wins now place them in strong position heading toward November inside heavily conservative territory.
Carlos De La Cruz delivered one of the evening’s clearest signals of Trump’s staying power among Texas conservatives. The San Antonio area contender captured the Republican nomination in Congressional District 35 after defeating state Rep. John Lujan.
De La Cruz defeated Lujan by roughly 5,000 votes, as reported by The Texas Tribune. Abbott backed Lujan entered the race carrying years of conservative legislative credentials.
Roughly 32,000 ballots were cast across the district. Newly redrawn boundaries and an overcrowded field had already transformed the race into one of Texas’ most heavily scrutinized contests.
Trump aligned hopefuls consistently overwhelmed rivals connected to older Republican power circles throughout this cycle. Tuesday’s outcome again showed how strongly conservative primary voters continue responding to Trump’s endorsement network.
Abbott still holds enormous influence throughout Texas politics. Even so, contenders supported by Trump repeatedly overpowered opponents linked to the governor’s political operation.
Vacant congressional seats intensified pressure throughout this year’s runoff calendar. Retirements, redistricting changes, and public controversies opened rare opportunities that triggered fierce competition across multiple parts of the state.
Some contests turned into loyalty examinations as hopefuls fought to position themselves nearest to Trump’s movement. Others shifted into costly regional struggles shaped by district maps and turnout patterns.
San Antonio attracted particular attention because District 35 emerged from newly reshaped boundaries following redistricting changes. That redraw altered the area’s political makeup and escalated maneuvering before runoff ballots were cast.
Republican nominees are now expected to enter the fall season carrying substantial advantages. Several also benefit from historic voting patterns that have traditionally favored Republicans across Texas.
Tuesday night delivered another blunt reminder of Trump’s enduring strength inside Republican primaries. Candidates tied closely to his political identity continue drawing powerful support from conservative voters despite resistance from competing Republican factions.
