Graduation caps filled the air at Virginia State University this spring. For Aszwan Hite, the walk across the stage carried weight far beyond a college diploma.
Years earlier, a devastating car crash left him unconscious for two weeks. Surgeons performed multiple procedures on his head while relatives waited beside a hospital bed hoping he would wake up. Even after regaining consciousness, standing and walking required months of rehabilitation.
College never left his mind. According to Virginia State University, Hite applied to the school while still recovering and eventually earned a business marketing degree after rebuilding his strength and returning to campus.
A cap and gown once seemed impossibly distant. The crash forced him to miss his high school graduation, a milestone many students celebrate only once. Crossing the stage at Virginia State offered a moment he had been denied years before.
Class assignments, exams and rehabilitation exercises became part of the same climb. Progress arrived step by step. Each academic requirement completed represented a victory over circumstances that could have easily altered the course of his future.
Creative work now sits at the center of his ambitions. Hite hopes to build a career in film, combining business knowledge with videography and visual production skills. Recognition for photography and video projects helped strengthen those ambitions while he worked toward graduation.
Professors and classmates watched the transformation unfold. Hospital rooms gave way to classrooms. Rehabilitation sessions gave way to commencement ceremonies. What once looked like a medical crisis with no clear path forward gradually became a college success story built through persistence and hard work.
When his name was called and he crossed the stage, the moment represented far more than a degree. A young man who once lay unconscious through a graduation ceremony finally reached a different stage, diploma in hand, proving how far determination can carry a person.
