Jen Kiggans is facing intensifying scrutiny after the Virginia congresswoman appeared to endorse a racially charged remark about House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries during a conservative radio appearance that rapidly spread online and drew condemnation from lawmakers and civil rights organizations.
Kiggans joined Richmond radio host Rich Herrera on WRVA’s Richmond’s Morning News to discuss Virginia’s escalating redistricting dispute and efforts to reshape congressional maps before upcoming elections. Near the end of the broadcast, Herrera said Jeffries should keep his “cotton picking hands off of Virginia,” a phrase widely condemned because of its historical connection to slavery and racist insults directed at Black Americans.
Reuters reported that Kiggans responded by saying, “That’s right. Ditto. Yes, yes to that.” Recordings from the exchange circulated online within hours and prompted demands for either an apology or resignation from office.
Jeffries became closely tied to the dispute because of his support for renewed efforts surrounding congressional maps previously struck down by the Virginia Supreme Court. Republicans praised the ruling while Democrats argued the proposal reflected voter backed redistricting reforms before the court halted implementation.
Kiggans later attempted to distance herself from Herrera’s phrasing by saying she agreed only with the broader point that Jeffries should avoid influencing elections inside Virginia. Opponents rejected that defense and argued she failed to immediately condemn the remark during the interview.
Former Virginia congresswoman Elaine Luria publicly criticized the comments while several Democratic figures intensified demands for consequences. Additional condemnation emerged from members of the Congressional Black Caucus along with party leadership inside the House of Representatives.
Pressure surrounding the dispute increased because Kiggans represents one of the country’s most competitive congressional districts ahead of the next election cycle. Republican and Democratic operatives are closely watching whether the fallout damages her standing among independent and moderate voters across southeastern Virginia.
Disputes tied to race, campaign rhetoric, and public conduct have become major flashpoints inside tightly contested elections across the country. Recordings and clipped audio now travel rapidly across digital platforms where public reaction often develops before elected officials fully respond.
For Kiggans, consequences connected to the interview continue stretching beyond a single radio appearance. What began as a discussion involving congressional maps and state elections has evolved into a widening dispute over race, judgment, and whether voters will ultimately accept her explanation during a closely watched campaign season.

We already know what they say about us behind closed doors. This shouldn't even been news worthy in 2026.
She didn’t correct him so she must agree with his racist comment.
