Virginia moved to mark a moment of mourning across the state, ordering flags lowered in memory of a woman whose death has drawn renewed attention to domestic violence.

Governor Abigail Spanberger directed that United States and Virginia flags be flown at half staff on May 4, setting aside the day to honor Dr. Cerina Wanzer Fairfax and others whose lives have been lost to domestic violence. Order applies to state and local government buildings from sunrise to sunset.

Cerina Wanzer Fairfax, a Northern Virginia dentist and mother, was killed on April 16 at her home in Annandale in what authorities described as a murder suicide involving her husband, former lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax.

According to state officials, Spanberger’s directive recognized Fairfax’s professional work, her role as a parent, and the broader impact of domestic violence across communities. The order extends the tribute beyond a single case to include victims statewide.

Children were present in the home at the time of the incident, adding to the weight of the tragedy. One of the couple’s teenage children made the emergency call that brought authorities to the scene.

Spanberger’s statement emphasized Fairfax’s life and contributions, noting her dedication to patients and her family. The recognition places her within a wider effort to confront domestic violence while honoring those affected.

Lowering flags carries symbolic weight but also reflects continuing concern among state leaders about how to address violence within households. Officials have pointed to the case as a reminder of the need for awareness, support systems, and intervention.

Fairfax’s career as a dentist connected her to patients throughout Northern Virginia, where she built a practice and a reputation for care.

Attention surrounding the case has expanded beyond the immediate event, focusing on prevention and resources for individuals facing similar risks.

The directive sets a visible marker across Virginia, linking remembrance with a broader call to confront domestic violence.

What remains is the recognition that behind each public tribute stands a private loss that continues long after the flags are raised again.
