Polling from The New York Times and Siena College shows Black voters registering the strongest opposition to Donald Trump’s presidency among every racial group measured in the national survey, reflecting deep anger over rising household costs and the country’s direction.

Fresh numbers from the poll show 83% of Black participants disapprove of Trump’s job performance, according to the survey. That figure stands higher than negative ratings measured among every other racial category included in the findings.

Economic strain sits heavily beneath those numbers. Roughly 89% of Black participants described current financial conditions as either fair or poor, while 80% said the nation is heading in the wrong direction.

Those sentiments arrive as grocery prices, rent payments, utility costs, and insurance bills keep tightening around families across large stretches of the United States. For many households already navigating long standing wealth disparities, rising expenses have pushed basic routines further out of reach.

Discontent stretched well beyond one demographic inside the findings. Overall, 59% of Americans questioned in the survey disapproved of Trump’s handling of the presidency.

White participants registered lower negative ratings than Black voters, though dissatisfaction still surfaced across the results. Roughly 51% of white respondents disapproved of Trump’s performance, while 71% of Hispanic respondents expressed unfavorable views. Another 65% of participants identifying with other racial or ethnic backgrounds also registered negative opinions.

Affordability strain has become increasingly visible across the country in recent months. Gas stations, grocery aisles, apartment complexes, and checkout counters now serve as constant reminders of how expensive ordinary life has become for millions of people.

Within many Black neighborhoods, financial anxiety often intersects with older distrust tied to healthcare access, housing instability, employment opportunities, and uneven recovery after downturns. Those overlapping realities can intensify reactions toward presidential leadership during periods of instability.

Surveys involving Black voters have historically carried enormous influence in presidential elections because Democrats rely heavily on strong turnout from Black communities during national campaigns. Weak approval numbers among Black Americans can also shape broader perceptions tied to credibility, momentum, and voter enthusiasm.

Campaign operatives from both parties are likely studying those figures closely as election activity intensifies across battleground states ahead of November. For now, the survey leaves Trump confronting deep dissatisfaction inside a voting bloc still signaling mounting anger over the nation’s direction and the rising costs reshaping everyday life.
