Fort Wayne police are investigating the death of a 75 year old woman after a dispute at a Tim Hortons near one of the city’s busiest commercial areas turned violent earlier this month.
Officers were called to the business on Ice Way near Lima Road and West Coliseum Boulevard on May 13 after reports of a disturbance involving staff members and a customer, as reported by the Fort Wayne Police Department. Anita Grayson later died following the incident, pushing the matter into a far more serious phase as authorities sort through surveillance recordings and witness accounts.
Police said the dispute began after Grayson entered the coffee shop to complain about a problem involving a drive thru order. Tempers quickly rose between Grayson and a 17 year old employee near the front counter.
A 20 year old shift lead moved between them as voices grew louder near the register area. Authorities said the employee repeatedly instructed Grayson to leave while attempting to keep her separated from the younger worker.
Seconds later, the situation turned physical. Police said Grayson allegedly shoved the shift lead backward before striking her in the face during the altercation.
Security cameras recorded the encounter from multiple angles. Authorities are reviewing footage frame by frame while gathering statements from customers and employees who witnessed the incident unfold.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether injuries connected to the altercation directly contributed to Grayson’s death, and prosecutors have not announced possible criminal charges.
Employees working that afternoon now find themselves tied to an emotionally heavy criminal case involving customer aggression, workplace safety, and the limits workers face while attempting to calm heated situations in fast food businesses.
Restaurants across the country have increasingly dealt with disputes tied to incorrect orders, long waits, and rising frustration in crowded dining areas. Arguments that once ended with complaints at a register are now more frequently spilling into violent encounters captured on surveillance recordings and cellphone video.
Cars continue rolling through the busy retail stretch near the Tim Hortons while authorities reconstruct Grayson’s final hours. For now, one woman is dead, several employees remain tied to an active criminal case, and a routine coffee stop has hardened into an unresolved collision carrying legal and emotional consequences across Fort Wayne.
