ROTHBURY, Mich. — The family of Jerard "Jay" Jackson, a 28-year-old Black man from Illinois, is demanding answers after his body was discovered in a wooded area near the Electric Forest music festival. His sudden passing has transformed a weekend of celebration into a search for truth, leaving kin and community members grappling with a lack of definitive information.
State troopers initially encountered the man on June 29 after he summoned them to his campsite to report a purported crime involving his peers, identified as friends DeAndre Miller and Conor Prettyman. Reported by the Detroit Free Press, investigators determined after interviews that no criminal act had taken place, stating the individual appeared to be experiencing a mental health crisis.
"Jay called me that morning sounding completely out of character, saying he felt unsafe," Jackson's mother told local reporters. While Miller and Prettyman have maintained they were attempting to support Jackson during his period of distress, the family has expressed deep skepticism regarding their accounts.
Regarding Prettyman, Jackson's sister remarked, "We don't understand why Conor hasn't been more forthcoming about those final hours; his silence on the details doesn't add up." Shortly after this interaction, the young man departed the festival grounds alone in a rental truck, leaving behind his cellular device and the friends who had accompanied him from out of state.
His remains were discovered the following day approximately 150 feet off the Hart-Montague Trail, mere steps from where his vehicle was abandoned with his wallet and keys secured inside. The family remains unconvinced by the official narrative, with Jackson's sister noting that "Jay was the life of the party and looked out for everyone."
She expressed profound disbelief that he would voluntarily abandon his belongings and his friends, stating, "He wouldn't just walk away and leave his keys, phone, and his boys without a word; something is deeply wrong here." Foul play is not suspected by Michigan State Police, who have labeled the preliminary finding as a suicide.
These claims have met with immediate resistance from the grieving relatives, who maintain that Jackson had no known history of struggles and was the only Black individual within his immediate travel group. Interactions during his stay at the sprawling venue are being questioned by Jackson's kin as they seek to clarify the timeline of his final hours.
Speaking calmly with personnel was the last time many saw Jackson before he vanished, and loved ones are now focused on obtaining a comprehensive account of what transpired after that interaction. Medical examiner staff continue processing forensic findings while the family pushes for a more thorough review of the surrounding circumstances.
This tragic event has prompted calls for a comprehensive investigation into the facts surrounding the death, as relatives continue their search for definitive answers.
