OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — Elmore and Christine Wonsley have retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump to lead an independent investigation into the death of their 18-year-old son, Nolan Xavier Wells. The teenager, a Black college football player, disappeared on July 4 during a boat trip to Horn Island with a group of white friends and was found deceased in the water two days later.
Barrier island geography defines the site of this tragedy, yet family members reject the claim that Wells chose to stay behind on the undeveloped land, noting that such behavior contradicts his character and the safety protocols he practiced as an athlete, as reported by the Associated Press. During a press conference Friday, the parents highlighted deep inconsistencies in the accounts provided by his companions, who claimed he willingly separated from their group to remain with a woman on the beach.
Tampering remains a primary concern for the Wonsley family, who allege that Wells’s mobile phone retrieved only after friends returned it to them showed signs of manipulation, including deleted messages that could contain vital information about his final hours. Christine Wonsley also noted that multiple images and videos from the holiday outing were inexplicably absent from her son’s social media accounts, despite the standard retention period for such content.
Ben Crump emphasized that the investigation is now focused on resolving conflicting witness statements, particularly regarding whether Wells ever returned to the boat as suggested by some onlookers. The family has transferred Wells’s body to Washington, D.C., where a former chief medical examiner is conducting an independent autopsy to determine if any physical injuries occurred prior to his death.
Sheriff John Ledbetter has encouraged members of the public to come forward with any footage or firsthand observations from the holiday that might clarify the events on the shoreline, noting that the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office maintains an active and ongoing inquiry. While officials have stated they do not currently suspect foul play, they are specifically seeking media depicting alleged altercations or containing images that might include Wells.
Rev. Al Sharpton has pledged to support the Wonsley family in their pursuit of clarity alongside other civil rights leaders, citing the region’s historical context of racial tensions as a primary reason for their intense scrutiny of the proceedings. A significant influx of community donations continues to bolster the family’s commitment to uncovering the truth behind the circumstances of the tragedy.
Transparency, rather than speculation, remains the singular goal as the Wonsley family navigates the devastating loss of their son.

They are trying their best to make this be another one of those mysterious drownings they always determine when a young Black person dies near or in the water. There is no doubt in my mind foul play is involved. I hope the family stays vigilant for answers and do not give in to what white supremacy throws at them.
Too many unanswered questions, and his so-called friends immediately lawyering up is suspect AF. If you’re not guilty, then why do you need a lawyer? I kind of figured that his phone had been tampered with. One of the friends’s father is a judge. These boys have protection from the truth coming out on multiple levels.
