Conservatives Not Happy When Jasmine Crockett Brands Smithsonian Hearing a 'White Pride Rally'

Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat from Texas, faced conservative backlash after describing a House panel as a "white pride rally". Lawmakers gathered on July 21 for the House Oversight Committee session.

"Rewriting American History: Examining the Smithsonian's Efforts to Reshape the Past" served as the official title for the congressional gathering. This framing established the primary legislative focus for Crockett's controversial floor remarks.

Bipartisan members debated cultural exhibits and national human rights narratives. Colorado Republican Representative Lauren Boebert criticized the institution during the proceedings, asking museum director Anthea Hartig, "What about the tens of millions of aborted babies?"

Crockett countered that congressional Republicans were attempting to dilute the institution's educational obligations. "Welcome to the Republicans' white pride rally disguised as a congressional hearing," she stated, adding that political attacks on historical displays are an attempt to erase history.

Testimony before the committee came from Anthea Hartig, executive director of the National Museum of American History. Hartig addressed museum administration goals and methods for interpreting complex historical records.

A White House Domestic Policy Council report published earlier in July criticized Hartig and museum management. That administration document functioned as a principal catalyst for convening the subcommittee.

Boebert challenged Crockett by questioning whether debate should center exclusively on racial conflict. Defending the museum's displays, Crockett referenced lynchings, voting rights restrictions, the forced removal of Indigenous populations, and the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing.

Ian Miles Cheong and various right-wing social media users condemned the Texas Democrat's remarks as inflammatory rhetoric. Critics argued on digital platforms that examining institutional bias is standard legislative oversight rather than a racially motivated attack.

Texas Republican Representative Brandon Gill also examined merchandise sold at the museum during the session, questioning Hartig over items featuring the phrase "Latina power".

With committee records showing federal funding allocations for the Smithsonian total over $1 billion annually, congressional Republicans have pledged to scrutinize agency spending budgets through the remainder of the fiscal year.
