Fundraiser for Nolan Wells' Friends Nears $90K as Organizers Allege Threats and Defamation

The case of 18-year-old Nolan Wells, whose death is under active investigation by Mississippi authorities, has led to widespread harassment and threats against those connected to it. Wells was last seen with friends on July 4 at Mississippi's Horn Island, and his grieving parents have reported receiving racist attacks, hate mail, and negative reviews at the mother's workplace.

Organizers of a GiveSendGo campaign state that the young men who were with Wells before his disappearance have been subjected to extensive threats, harassment, and defamation. According to the fundraiser, the money is intended to help pay anticipated legal expenses, including defense against potential wrongful-death litigation and possible defamation lawsuits.

Benjamin Hudson, father of participant Warren Hudson, organized the fundraiser. The fundraiser states that the young men cooperated with investigators and turned over available information, with monies directed to Taylor and Cox Law Firm, P.A.

Federal law enforcement stepped in after the online fallout escalated into criminal behavior, leading to multiple federal cases against individuals accused of making threats. Court records show authorities arrested a California man accused of threatening Warren Hudson's mother, Ashlee Cole, and an Ohio woman charged with placing Mississippi government offices on lockdown following repeated bomb threats.

Publicly addressing the toll of the backlash, Nolan Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, wrote on Facebook, "At the end of the day the only question Elmore and I need answered is what happened to our son Nolan." While family attorney Ben Crump and civil rights leaders called for transparency, fundraiser organizers stated, "Instead of being allowed to mourn, what followed was an unprecedented online campaign of accusations, harassment, threats and defamation."

State and local authorities have not announced any criminal charges directly related to Wells' death. The official state autopsy results remain under seal pending review by a grand jury now under way.
