ROTHBURY, Mich. — Jerard Jackson, a 28-year-old Black man from Illinois, vanished from the Electric Forest grounds in Rothbury on June 30 and was discovered deceased in a nearby wooded area the following day. Loved ones are now demanding rigorous explanations regarding how a morning request for assistance escalated into a fatal outcome while under the watch of state troopers.
Michigan State Police personnel interviewed the man earlier that day after he initiated contact to report a suspicious incident involving a peer. Investigators reported finding no evidence that a crime had occurred, and Jackson subsequently left the festival area alone. Authorities have suggested the death resulted from suicide, a conclusion the family vehemently disputes given his lack of any history regarding mental health challenges.
Conor Prettyman, a white friend who attended the festivities, signaled distress within group messaging channels as hours passed without any sign of his companion. Prettyman noted that Jackson appeared to be experiencing a psychological crisis after the confrontation with troopers, highlighting that Jackson had attempted to surrender himself to authorities during the interview.
Interactions between the decedent and officers remain the focal point of an inquiry that grieving relatives believe requires more thorough vetting. Police have documented their initial contact with Jackson, but his family is pushing for a more comprehensive disclosure of the events that transpired during those critical morning hours.
Final autopsy results are currently pending as the medical examiner completes the report to determine the official cause and manner of death. Jackson’s family now rely on digital fragments and social media accounts to reconstruct the events that occurred after he parted ways with troopers.
Rural policing strategies during large-scale events are receiving attention as advocates and family members seek to understand the decision-making process during the festival. Accountability remains the primary objective for the family as they pursue further information regarding the initial contact with the department.
Pending results from toxicology and forensic analysis will clarify the circumstances surrounding the death of the attendee. Until then, those mourning the loss must navigate an evolving narrative provided by the agencies overseeing the investigation.
Closure remains elusive while the investigation lingers without additional public updates. Representatives for the family continue to seek clarity regarding every conversation recorded during that morning in Rothbury to understand how this situation reached its tragic end.

This has been the typical Law Enforcement/Medical Examiner results when it pertains to Black people who have died mysteriously. They will always use the old medical determination of death by suicide-No foul pay. Essentially this means LE is involved in some capacity with the person's death. Black families must remain vigilant and demand an independent autopsy; or seek an independent autopsy.
