Felony charges against a longtime Trenton police detective renewed attention on police conduct and accountability after a 2022 arrest involving a Black man who was pepper sprayed during an encounter with officers.

Detective Aaron Bernstein, a 24 year veteran of the Trenton Police Department, was indicted on five felony charges tied to the incident, reported by NJ Advance Media. Charges include aggravated assault, perjury, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and two counts of official misconduct connected to allegations that Bernstein falsified records after the arrest.

Case stems from a May 2022 encounter in which Bernstein allegedly used pepper spray on a 27 year old Black man before later submitting reports investigators claimed did not accurately describe what happened during the arrest. Grand jury indictment followed a broader investigation into Bernstein’s conduct during and after the incident.

Bernstein publicly argued that the prosecution was influenced partly by discrimination connected to his Jewish faith. Detective maintained that he was being unfairly targeted because of his religion while preparing to challenge the charges in court.

Official misconduct charges carry serious legal consequences under New Jersey law and could expose Bernstein to mandatory prison time if convicted. Indictment intensified scrutiny surrounding the Trenton Police Department as police accountability cases continue drawing public attention nationwide.

Bernstein remained on administrative leave following the indictment while court proceedings moved forward. Trenton police officials did not publicly respond to either the charges or Bernstein’s allegations involving religious discrimination.

Use of force investigations often focus heavily on officer reports, witness statements, body camera footage, and departmental procedures. Allegations involving false reports can become especially damaging because officer credibility remains central in criminal investigations and courtroom testimony.

Cases involving excessive force or inaccurate police reports frequently shape public trust between departments and local communities. Questions surrounding report accuracy and officer conduct often become larger than the original arrest itself once criminal charges are filed against law enforcement officials.

Bernstein spent more than two decades working in the Trenton Police Department before the indictment. Length of service added another dimension to the case because veteran officers are often viewed as representatives of departmental standards and training.

Court proceedings are expected to determine whether prosecutors can prove Bernstein intentionally falsified records connected to the arrest and whether force used during the encounter violated state law. Defense attorneys are expected to challenge both the evidence and motives behind the prosecution.

For many residents in Trenton, indictment of a veteran detective turned a single arrest into another public test involving police credibility, accountability, and confidence in the justice system.

This officer attacked this man and got caught lying about it and now he’s trying to weaponize his faith to escape charges. If he don’t got straight to hell with that bullshnizzle. It’s bad enough he violated this man’s right, but to use his religion to get out of it, adds insult to injury. I hope they find this man guilty and go back and look at his record since he’s a veteran on the force. He probably has decades of abuse against Black people.
