Mississippi Officer Kills 1-Year-Old Black Child Kohen Wiley After Alleged Diaper Shoplifting

Kohen Wiley, a one-year-old Black child, was killed after a police officer opened fire in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Mississippi, during an encounter that began with allegations of shoplifting involving a box of diapers.

Authorities said the officer discharged a weapon after believing a vehicle posed an immediate danger. Investigators contend the driver moved toward the officer while attempting to leave the parking lot, prompting the use of deadly force.

Witness accounts have challenged that version of events. According to Atlanta Black Star, several people at the scene said they saw two Black women leaving the store in a hurry, with one carrying diapers and the other holding Kohen before both entered the vehicle.

Gunfire struck the vehicle during the confrontation, killing the child and critically injuring one of the women inside. An allegation involving merchandise worth far less than a felony offense ended with a toddler dead and another person fighting for survival.
