Louisiana Teen Gets 13 Years After Father Defending Daughter From Bullies Was Shot Three Times

Corey Breaux stepped between his 14-year-old daughter and a group of teenagers he said had been tormenting her when a confrontation turned violent and left him fighting for his life.

Jerry Huggins, 19, has now been sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated second-degree battery and illegal use of weapons. Huggins originally faced attempted first-degree murder charges stemming from the March 2025 shooting.

Breaux recalled facing an armed teenager during the encounter and realizing the danger in front of him. According to Atlanta Black Star, he later described the terrifying moments before gunfire erupted.

March 2025 changed the father's life when bullets struck him three times while trying to shield his daughter from harassment. Hospital photographs showing him recovering alongside his children later spread across social media and became a powerful symbol of what unfolded.

Prosecutors secured guilty pleas to two felony counts earlier this week. An 11-year prison term was imposed for aggravated second-degree battery, while a separate weapons conviction added another two years.

Breaux said fear set in as he confronted Huggins. "I was going, 'God, I don't know what to do,'" he recalled while describing the encounter.

Huggins was allegedly carrying a firearm equipped with an extended magazine during the dispute. Breaux has maintained that the weapon's configuration showed preparation for serious violence rather than a spontaneous outburst.

Hospital rooms, recovery treatments and months of healing followed the shooting. Physical wounds eventually began to mend, but memories from that afternoon remained fresh for the father and his children.

Sentencing brought legal proceedings against Huggins to a close. Guilty pleas eliminated the need for a jury proceeding and secured a lengthy prison term tied to the shooting.

Violence that began with accusations of bullying ultimately left one man hospitalized and another headed to prison. Breaux's decision to protect his daughter transformed an ordinary parental intervention into an event that would alter multiple lives for years to come.
