WASHINGTON — Dr. Anthony Fauci has been ordered to appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee after Chairman Rand Paul issued a subpoena compelling testimony about COVID-19 policies, pandemic-era decisions, and questions surrounding virus-origin research. The hearing is expected to take place in July and marks Paul's first subpoena as committee chairman.

Six months of negotiations preceded the subpoena. According to statements from Paul, Fauci had previously agreed to appear before the committee before later withdrawing, prompting lawmakers to compel his attendance through formal Senate authority.

Paul said the hearing will examine several subjects that have fueled years of political conflict, including U.S.-funded research connected to Wuhan, allegations involving gain-of-function experiments, record-retention questions, and the circumstances surrounding a pardon issued by former President Joe Biden. As reported by the New York Post, Paul argues the public deserves direct answers from Fauci under oath.

Fauci became the most recognizable public-health figure during the coronavirus emergency and later emerged as a frequent target of criticism from Republican lawmakers. Disputes over virus origins, government restrictions, laboratory research, and agency communications have continued long after emergency declarations were lifted.

Senate activity has kept COVID-19 origins at the forefront of committee work. Paul's panel has pursued records from government agencies, scientists, journals, and whistleblowers while examining claims tied to Wuhan research and intelligence assessments. Committee investigators have also sought communications, grant records, internal agency documents, and intelligence assessments while tracing how government officials, scientists, and public-health agencies handled questions surrounding virus origins during the earliest months of the outbreak.

July's testimony could produce one of the highest-profile congressional hearings involving Fauci since he left government service. Senators are expected to question the former health official about decisions that shaped the national response to a pandemic that altered daily life across the United States and around the world.
