Murder allegations against one of Katt Williams’ longtime security guards are pushing a fatal dispute between two comedians deeper into Mississippi’s criminal court system nearly a year after the confrontation turned deadly.

A Desoto County grand jury charged Tranell Williams with first degree murder in connection with the August 2025 death of comedian Reggie Carroll. Authorities said gunfire erupted at a Southaven house leased through a company associated with Katt Williams.

Hostility between the two men reportedly escalated over several months while they shared living space, reported by FOX 13 Memphis. Tranell Williams has maintained he acted to protect himself and accused Carroll of repeatedly brandishing firearms throughout the arrangement.

Tranell Williams said he documented several encounters because he believed conditions inside the house were becoming unstable. He also described repeatedly leaving arguments in an effort to prevent physical confrontation, saying he “ran 10 times” before the fatal encounter unfolded.

Carroll, a 52 year old comedian from Baltimore, previously appeared on Katt Williams’ Heaven on Earth Tour. Statements tied to the case indicated Carroll relocated to the Southaven address after leaving another location associated with the entertainer.

District Attorney Matthew Barton secured the grand jury decision after authorities reviewed recordings, witness statements, and material collected from the scene. Under Mississippi law, prosecutors must prove deliberate intent to secure a first degree murder conviction, while defense lawyers continue arguing the gunfire stemmed from perceived danger.

Defense attorneys are expected to focus heavily on the history between the roommates and Tranell Williams’ description of repeated firearm intimidation inside the house. State lawyers, meanwhile, will likely argue the response exceeded lawful protection under Mississippi statutes.

No court date has been announced. Conflicting versions of what happened inside the Southaven house continue hanging over a criminal case tied to Katt Williams and the death of a comedian who once toured beside him.
